Excess is a momentum based trader that uses a grid to build position, handle volatility and to recover if price action reverses. Each grid starts with a pair of straddle trades placed around the current price; a buy stop order above and a sell stop order below. A suitable dynamic profit target is calculated. If price moves up the buy stop order is triggered. A further straddle pair of trades is then placed, one above the triggered order and a sell stop order beneath the pending sell. In this way the grid builds out from the initial center. The result of the opposite trades being placed this way, is the off-setting of draw-down amounts, so draw downs can stay very low ($58 in a 7 year back test HERE).
If price continues to move up then the profit target is hit. Once this happens, then all orders are closed to take the profit. If price moves down then the sell stop order is triggered and a mirror of the buy actions results, again with the grid being closed to take profit once the profit target is hit. When the grid is closed, the process then repeats with a new grid being started. Grids can be started in response to a specified signal (of which XS has a wide range from which you can choose), or with no signal, in which case a new grid starts immediately the previous grid closes.
What if price changes direction before the profit target is reached? If the opposing stop order is triggered a new straddle pair of stop orders is added, building the grid out. If price pushes on in this new direction, then eventually the profit target is reached and the grid closed. Volatility can result in several layers of the grid being triggered before price sets on a given direction and the profit target finally being hit. A dynamic profit target that diminishes with increasing grid size increases the likelihood that the profit target is hit. Using good settings, this strategy results in the perfect combination of a very high proportion of winning trades combined with a low draw down. Tests to date have shown it to be effective with a wide range of instruments include Forex majors, gold and indexes.
